Phonic Books

Phonic Books is a for-profit brand that produces material to teach reading skills, delighting children and educators and improving the literature and lives of children around the world.

Background

DK management recognised the need to refresh and enhance the Phonic Books websites in order to improve the customer experience of using the site, understanding the offering and ordering books, and as a result, increasing user engagement and satisfaction, increasing newsletter subscribers, increasing brand reach and sales, as well as integrating the web systems into the wider PRH systems to provide better reposting.

  • Ensure seamless navigation between the e-commerce store and the Phonics Hub.

  • Address technical and logistical considerations of migrating to Shopify.

  • Optimise the sites for international audiences, considering shipping, duties, and pricing.

Challenges

  • Platform migration: Ensuring a seamless transition from WooCommerce to Shopify, including the accurate transfer of product data, customer accounts, and order histories, while minimising disruptions to the customer experience.

  • System integration: Aligning Shopify with Penguin Random House’s (PRH) infrastructure, such as warehousing, inventory management, and reporting systems, requiring collaboration with cross-functional teams.

  • Diverse audiences: Designing for both teachers and parents, each with unique needs like accessing free resources, understanding phonics methodology, and purchasing books.
